Matisse or Delacroix may have gone to "the Orient" (the Near-East) but their paintings are not realistic. Odalisques are expressing the fantasies of their time & place under the cover of another time & another place.

Thanks for sharing these great works.

http://davidikus.blogspot.com/davidikushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01122152277968126355noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-205231727184713705.post-39245691181072571212010-03-26T12:31:43.077-04:002010-03-26T12:31:43.077-04:00Wow these are fantastic they have such a vividness...Wow these are fantastic they have such a vividness to them, the colors really make the paintings come alive, thanks for posting!Pattyhttp://www.ultimatefitnessgear.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-205231727184713705.post-50964938616138049522010-03-26T11:41:46.730-04:002010-03-26T11:41:46.730-04:00Home, I agree entirely. She is almost insolent.
I have just looked at Vuillard on the net as I confess I have rather overlooked him over the years. I've heard it suggested it was because she returned the male gaze dead on. Maybe it's more because the model is clearly in it for the cash.
I've never painted a nude that I would display in my house, except for a couple of Valloton copies. It's a very difficult thing to bring off without being creepy.
BTW Rose, your post today made me wonder how much of an influence Vuillard may have been on Matisse.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
